Marriage rate reaches record low
A Pew Research Center study found that 51 percent of U.S. adults are married today compared with 72 percent 50 years ago. While the marriage rate is at a record low, the median ages for first-time brides and grooms is higher than ever – 26.5-years-old and 28.7-years-old, respectively. One researcher linked the decline to less societal and economic pressure on people to get married.
Class discussion: Find newspaper reports quoting academics, clergy and politicians on marriage. Do they express alarm about the state of marriage in the United States? What are their concerns? Find other newspaper reports on U.S. marriage and divorce rates. What are the trends? Which states have the lowest marriage rates? Which states have the highest divorce rates? Do these reports influence your views of marriage?
