Send us your Boston Globe lessons

Have you created some fun, interesting Common Core lessons for your students that use Boston Globe articles, photos or other content? Want to share your lessons with other teachers and win an Apple iPad?

The Boston Globe News in Education program is asking teachers to send in their best lessons plans for its NIE iPad Challenge. All lesson plans will be evaluated according to these criteria:

  • Each lesson must incorporate the Common Core State Standards.
  • Content from The Boston Globe must be part of all lessons. Content can include articles, columns, photographs, videos, infographics, etc.
  • Lessons must be engaging for students.
  • Teachers in other school districts must be able to use the lessons easily in their classrooms.

The winning submissions will be posted on the Boston Globe NIE site so that other teachers will be able to download them and use them in their classrooms. Here’s the schedule for submissions and awards:

NIE iPad Challenge begins April 14
Submission deadline 5 pm, Monday, May 19.
NIE iPad Challenge awards announced Week of June 2

All submissions will be judged on their own merit by a panel of educators. Special consideration will be given to interdisciplinary lesson plans or those specifically related to math, science and the arts.

Each applicant may submit up to three entries. An entry consists of one lesson plan with a minimum of four individual lessons. Each entry must include the following:

  1. Application for Boston Globe NIE iPad Challenge. Submit one completed application for each entry.
  2. Individual Common Core Lesson. Submit one completed Individual Common Core Lesson for each individual lesson in the lesson plan. Each lesson plan must have no fewer than four lessons.

Please email all submissions by 5 pm on Monday, May 19 to NIEchallenge@globe.com. Only digital submissions will be accepted.

For examples of other Boston Globe NIE lessons, check out NIE’s lesson plan page.

Other helpful information:

  • A group of teachers may collaborate on a single lesson plan, but only one iPad will be awarded if the lesson plan is chosen.
  • Submissions with an incomplete Application for Boston Globe NIE iPad Challenge or incomplete sheets for each Individual Common Core Lesson may be disqualified.
  • All lessons must be original work. All winning entries will become the property of The Boston Globe.
  • Lessons can be targeted at any grade level from kindergarten to grade 12.
