Activities:

1. Draw a horse running in the Kentucky Derby. Paste newspaper words that describe the horse around the border of your picture.

2. In your newspaper, find a place where you could take riding lessons or learn more about horses. What would you do there?

3. In your newspaper, circle words or pictures for items you could use to prepare to be a trainer or jockey.

4. Why are these important to the Kentucky Derby: (a) roses, (b) silks, (c) veterinarians and (d) Arabian stallions?

5. Write a story about attending the Kentucky Derby. Describe what you might see. Describe what you would do and how you would feel.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students understand the interactions of animals and their environments. (Science: Life Science)

(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
