Activities:
1. Draw a picture of modern fire fighters fighting a fire. Around the edge of your picture, paste newspaper words that describe fire fighters.
2. Collect news stories about wildfires that are burning in different parts of the country. Identify the state, the suspected cause of the fire, and how quickly fire fighters hope to bring the fire under control.
3. In the newspaper , circle products that are used to prevent or fight fires. Do you have any of these where you live? Which one?
4. Why were these important to the great London fire: (a) narrow streets, (b) drought, (c) night watchmen and (d) the Royal Navy?
5. Select a half of a block or a block in your community. Do an inventory of the types of buildings in that area. Which buildings look like they may be safe from fire – they are built of stone, brick or metal; there is open space around them. Which buildings look like they may be in more danger – they are made of materials that might burn more easily, or they are close to other buildings. Look for water sources near the buildings, like ponds, hoses or fire hydrants. Write a report discussing what you find.
Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.
This week's standard:
Students understand that history relates to events and
people of other
times and places. (History)
