Activities:

1. Divide a pie ce of paper into four squares. Label the sections: pleasant to taste, not pleasant to taste, pleasant to touch, and not pleasant to taste. Paste newspaper pictures in eac h of the appropriate sections. For exa mple, a cookie might be pleasant to taste, bu t a lemon might be unpleasant. A puppy might be pleasant to touch, but a cactus might be unpleasant.

2. In the newspaper, circle words or pictures of devices that might help Helen Keller learn and communicate if she were alive today.

3. Collect news stories that would interest Helen Keller because they are about her causes : voting rights, peace, poverty and disability rights. Which two stories do you think would be most important to her? Why?

4. How did these define Helen Keller: (a) bad behavior, (b) finger spelling, (c) travel and (d) water?

5. Select one of the stories you collected for No. 3. Now write a pretend letter to Helen Keller telling her about the issue today. Explain to her what you think should be done about the issue.
