Activities:

1. Draw a line down the center of a piece of paper to create two columns. Label one column “Writer” and the other “Artist.” Paste newspaper words and pictures that show what writers and artists use to do their work in the correct column.

2. Pick three news makers in the newspaper today. Now select a book featured in today’s Mini Page that you think each would enjoy. Explain your choices.

3. Select five headlines from the newspaper. Now pretend you are writing b ooks based on those headlines. M ake up a title for your books. Now have friends or family members see if they can match your book titles to the headlines.

4. Learn more about the Caldecott Honor Books by visiting this website: ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/caldecottmedal/caldecottmedal . Now select the book you would most like to read. Write a paragraph explaining why you selected that book.

5. Create your own book! Select two comic strip characters from the newspaper. Make up a story about the characters. Your story can be silly or serious. Write down your story. Now design a book cover for your story.
