Politicians Still Don't Get The, Uh … Internets
Politicians have never had the best grasp of technology. Today, that's most obvious when they and other government officials talk about the current big issue: encryption. Encryption can defeat valid, legal investigations, but security experts agree: Backdoors will make valid, legal encryption less secure.
Class discussion: How well do most politicians understand issues - like encryption on the Internet – that they want to “fix”? Could politicians' ignorance about technology harm average users? Where do lawmakers get their information to write laws dealing with complex problems with science, economics or health? How often do industry lobbyists actually write the laws that affect their clients?
