Yak’s Corner
A print and online children’s news magazine published once each month from September through May for Michigan kids ages 6-13. Each 12-page issue is filled with educational and entertaining stories about places, people and events in Michigan and around the world. The Yak’s Corner online page also includes “Yaktivities” for each issue, a Yak Art Gallery, student writing and more.

Common Core State Standard
LS.CCS.4/5/6 Grades 3-12: Students are asked to determine the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words through multiple choice vocabulary quizzes. Quizzes are designed to help students demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships and nuances in words, acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words, and gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phase important to comprehension or expression. Students are then asked to find the words within the newspaper and copy the sentence for context to it's overall meaning or function in a sentence.

DEFINITION:
A joint action by a group of employees claiming illness and not reporting for work in order to force the granting of certain demands; specif., such an action by a group forbidden by law to strike.

FOUND IN THE NEWS:
Detroit Public Schools will not be on the hook to pay more than $300,000 in legal fees to sue two teachers for what the district claims was their roles in instigating massive teacher sickouts earlier in the year.
