L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.

Famed physicist Stephen Hawking is making headlines: First, for his recent claim that aliens will come exploit planet earth for its resources. And now -- another huge claim: that time travel is possible.
■Class discussion: Hawking says he has thought about time travel and the possibility of an alien takeover for a long time, but never discussed it, for fear he'd be labeled a "crank." Do you think Hawking has gone off the deep end? Do you think aliens are coming? How far into the future would you want to go, if Hawking is right?
