Chemicals in fast food wrappers could be harmful
Synthetic chemicals that have been associated with high cholesterol, low birth weight, cancer and other health risks have been found in some fast food packaging, according to a new study. The packages most likely to contain the chemicals are paper wrappers known for their ability to resist oil, water, heat and stains — ideal for wrappers holding greasy, fast food items. "We have more than one reason to try to eat more fresh food, and to reduce our consumption of fast food,” said an author of the study. “This is another reason."
■Class discussion: How often do you eat fast food? Would worries about exposure to harmful chemicals change your eating habits? Why or why not? Do you prefer fresh food, processed food or fast food? Why? What are the health dangers or benefits of your food choices? Do you care more about in choosing what you eat — taste or your health? How much does advertising influence what you eat?
