Navy Bans E-Cigs Over Explosive 'Mishaps'
U.S. sailors will soon have to hand over their E-cigs before boarding their ships or aircraft. Apparently the U.S. Navy has seen enough explosions involving the E-cigarettes’ lithium-ion batteries. Fifteen explosion incidents were recorded between October 2015 and June 2016, and eight of those actually happened on board a Navy vessel or aircraft.
■Class discussion: Is the Navy right to ban E-cigarettes? Should it ban other electronic devices – computers, phones, etc. - that use lithium-ion batteries? Do you think the Navy uses equipment with those batteries? Should the government set safety standards for all lithium-ion batteries? Do you think any new product safety regulations are likely to be passed soon?
