C. Charleston is the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina, which was the first state to secede from the Union before the Civil War. It also was the first of the original 13 colonies to break away from Britain. In March of 1776 the colony adopted the Constitution of South Carolina to become the first republic in America.
A. Columbia also is the state's largest city. Most of the city burned in 1865 while being occupied by Union troops under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman. South Carolina's leaders have been criticized for still flying the Confederate battle flag at a war memorial in front of the statehouse dome in Columbia.
D. Rhodesia collapsed in 1979 when its government was overthrown by an armed uprising and South Africa rejected apartheid in 1994 - the year Roof was born. But during the time they flew the flags worn by him, both nations were segregated and ruled by white minorities.
B. Along with its neighbors in the Deep South, South Carolina lost much of its African American population during the Great Migration in the early 20th Century when blacks sought opportunities in northern cities. From 1708 to about 1930, South Carolina had an African American majority population that was segregated and ruled by a white minority.
