B. Originally colonized by the Dutch, Britain took control of the area in 1796. Guyana gained its independence in 1966 and is the only English-speaking nation in South America. Venezuela claims about 40 percent of Guyana's territory despite a 1899 ruling by an international arbitration tribunal that awarded the land to the then British colony.
A. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has described newly-elected Granger as a "hostage of Exxon Mobil," which recently discovered the offshore oil in a potential boon for Guyana, whose struggling economy relies heavily on rice, gold, diamonds and bauxite.
C. Maduro partially closed Venezuela's border with Colombia and ousted thousands of Colombian migrants. He accused Colombia of waging "an attack on Venezuela's economy" - a reference to the rampant smuggling of heavily subsidized food and other goods out of Venezuela, where more than five million Colombians live.
D. A World Health Organization (WHO) report published last gives Guyana an age-standardized suicide rate of 44.2 per 100,000 inhabitants. That compares with a world average of 11.4. Guyana's eastern neighbor Suriname has the fifth-highest suicide rate.
