School rejects HIV-positive student
The Milton Hershey School in Pennsylvania, which provides free education to children in need, rejected a 13-year-old boy because he has HIV. Despite federal law barring discrimination against people with HIV, the school said it rejected the boy to protect the 1,850 students who live at the school year-round. The AIDS Law Project is suing the school on behalf of the boy and his parents.■Class discussion: Do you believe the school acted properly? Would you worry about sharing a dorm room with someone with HIV? Search for newspaper reports and editorials about people living with disabilities. When should disabilities be considered in hiring, education, sports or other activities?
