The
Newspaper In Education (NIE) program is a nationwide program that
promotes and increases our children's literacy by using the newspaper
as a teaching tool. NIE is a unique way for schools, businesses
and the local newspaper to work together in a partnership that benefits
all of us - now and in the future.
NIE places a strong emphasis on guiding the futures of young students in the community. Using the newspaper in the classroom has helped students to become informed and involved citizens. The newspaper provides access to the most up-to-date information transpiring in the world. The students, from kindergarten to high school, learn about geography of their community, their world and even their universe while practicing math, critical thinking and writing skills.
More than twenty years of research has documented that students who read a newspaper regularly "get the reading habit" and score significantly higher on standardized tests of reading comprehension, vocabulary and writing.
Help
students become informed and involved citizens who can determine
and guide their own destiny in a democratic society.
Help
students develop skills of critical reading by teaching competence
in newspaper reading.
Provide educators with an economical, effective and exciting teaching vehicle for lessons in writing, history, mathematics, current events, consumer affairs, ecology and scores of other subjects and themes.
Promote students' personal growth through the use of the newspaper to provide information, entertainment and skills necessary for life.
Help students become lifelong readers.
Make learning fun!
