Teen Activist Malala Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
Malala Yousufzai, the 15-year-old girl who challenged the Taliban in Pakistan for women’s education, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was shot in the head and neck by a Taliban gunman as she was on her way to school last October. Yousufzai’s name was put forth by three members of the Norwegian parliament because of ... "her courageous commitment to the right of girls to education. A commitment that seemed so threatening to the extremists that they chose to try and kill her."
■Class discussion: Why do Taliban militants oppose education for women? Find examples of severe restrictions placed on women around the world. Which nation has the most college educated women? Where do women have the least and the greatest political power? Who was the last woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize? Why?
