Fiery crash injures fans at Daytona race
At least 28 fans were injured when more than a dozen cars piled up in the final curve of a race Saturday in Daytona Beach, Florida. Some of the debris went over a 22-foot-high fence, and some of it went through holes as the fence shredded when a car slammed into it and bounced back onto the track. Fans were treated at the track and at the hospital.
■Class discussion: It is unusual for spectators to be injured, but accidents are nothing new to NASCAR and other automobile races. Is danger part of the attraction of racing? What was the worst auto race accident involving spectators? How have fans been injured at other sporting events? What poses the greatest threat to crowds at sporting events?
