Five-year-old kills his little sister with "My First Rifle"
A two-year-old Kentucky girl was accidentally shot and killed last week by her five-year-old brother with a rifle he got as a present from his family. No one realized there was a bullet left in the .22-caliber rifle made by Crickett Firearms. It was part of the company’s "My First Rifle" line of smaller and lightweight guns that come in a variety of colors to appeal to children.
■Class discussion: The gun-maker says its goal is to "instill gun safety in the minds of youth shooters." What do you think of designing guns for young children? Can a five-year-old understand the dangers of firearms? The boy's family lives in a rural area. Do attitudes about guns differ between country and city residents? What is your opinion about gun control laws?
