Mayor Wants New Law Enforcing Tornado Shelters
As Oklahoma comes to grips with the devastation left behind from its deadly tornado, the mayor of the city most devastated said he wants to see a new law passed as soon as possible requiring homes be constructed with storm shelters or safe rooms. Most homes in Oklahoma lack basements because of the state’s clay soil and flooding conditions.
■Class discussion: What do you think of the mayor's proposal? Opponents say such rules would raise housing costs, but so do all building codes including those covering electrical and plumbing. How much should government regulate building? Should it or could it ban building in flood zones or earthquake areas? What about requiring storm shelters in schools?
