Shutdown hits low-income Americans
Some conservative pundits called the the U.S. government shutdown no big deal, but the impact has been devastating for some America’s most vulnerable citizens. Food assistance for poor women and infants was shut down, and children seeking trial treatments for cancer were turned away.
■Class discussion: How and why was the federal government shut down? Which government services were shut down or maintained? Why? How many people were laid off by the shutdown? What impact could the shutdown have on the economy and employment of non-government workers?
