Newspapers in Education

Common Core State Standard
L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.

Video reporting: Including multiple sources

An insurance company in Colorado denied a baby health insurance because he was "too fat". After much media coverage, Rocky Mountain Health Plans revised its policy.

This video came from Newsy, an online video news service started in the spring in partnership with the Missouri School of Journalism. The service produces videos that analyse the key differences in how a story is being reported by various news organizations.

"As the Internet makes reading news from multiple sources from around the world easier and easier, the public has become used to getting different sides of the same story. Newsy's effort to make this more convenient in video form is admirable." -- Editor's Weblog

Class discussion: Why is it important to include insight from multiple sources when reporting a story? Is this video just reporting on the reporting? How is that valuable?
