California Passes Plastic Bag Ban
California's legislature has passed a ban on single-use plastic bags. If signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, the proposal would ban grocery and convenience stores from providing plastic bags for their customers. Shoppers would have to either bring their own bags, or pay 10 cents at checkout for a paper or reusable plastic bag.
■Class discussion: Would you be willing to do without single-use plastic shopping bags to protect the environment and wildlife? Does banning plastic bags interfere with our lives too much? Are environmental protection laws too strict or not strong enough? Why? Do you think air and water pollution is getting worse or better?
