Pope Francis said he supports same-sex civil unions in a new documentary film. In the film "Francesco," the pope says: "Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God." While the pope supports same-sex civil unions or partnerships, it's not the same as marriage in the church, said theology professor Candida Moss. But, she also said “this is a really big moment." It’s a major shift in the Catholic church, which has described homosexual unions as "intrinsically disordered."
Class discussion: Do you favor or oppose the pope’s endorsement of same-sex civil unions? Why? What impact will the pope’s statement have in the United States? What impact will it have in those nations where homosexuals can face long prison sentences and even death? What role does religion have in spreading either tolerance or intolerance of minority groups? Can you find examples of religious leaders fighting or inciting discrimination against minorities? Will the pope’s statement change the way Catholic clergy treats homosexuals?
