Flying mailman tries to deliver a message to the Capitol
Carrying “special delivery” letters to every member of Congress demanding political finance reform, a 61-year-old mailman from Florida flew his fragile ultralight gyrocopter through some of the most closely protected airspace on the planet and landed it on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol last week. He had announced his plans on the Internet and in his hometown newspaper. He said he felt compelled to do what he could to halt corruption in the nation’s capital.
Class discussion: The mailman told everyone about his protest plans and even talked to a Secret Service agent in Florida. How did he get away with his flight? Do you think unlimited campaign contributions have corrupted our elected leaders? Why or why not? Did the Supreme Court ruling that money equals free speech give unequal rights to the richest Americans? How much of their time do politicians spend chasing big campaign contributors? Who are politicians likely to listen to – big donors or average voters?
