Six teenagers under 18 are running for governor in Kansas, and adults in the legislature aren't pleased. The first teen candidate, Jack Bergeson, said his interest in running was sparked when he realized Kansas had no laws about who could run for governor. Five other teens have since joined in the race. A state representative has introduced a bill that would ban anyone too young to vote from running for governor. But, the bill will not affect this year’s election.
Class discussion: Could a person under 18 run for public office in your state? Do you think an underage candidate could win office? Has an underage candidate ever been elected? Should any citizen be prevented from running for office? Should any citizen be prevented from voting? What are the voting laws in your state? Do you trust voters to elect qualified people to office? Why or why not? Do you think the political system is working?
