Nintendo's Mario is no longer a plumber
Video games' most recognizable red-and-blue-clad plumber isn't actually a plumber anymore. Nintendo has updated Mario’s profile, saying the mustachioed man "seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago." Now, it says he prefers tennis, racing or anything "sporty."
Class discussion: What do you think of Mario’s new profile? Did you even know that he was supposed to be a plumber? His creator said he was a carpenter when he first appeared in “Donkey Kong” in 1981. What is a backstory? Do video games need backstories to explain the plots and characters? How do backstories show up in other fiction works like books and films? Can you come up with an example?
