1. THE DANGER OF GREENHOUSE GASES
Scientists from a top group in the United States say that greenhouse gases—like carbon dioxide and methane—are very dangerous for people and the planet. These gases come from things like cars, power plants, and factories, and they make the Earth hotter. That causes more heatwaves, wildfires, and other problems for people’s health. The scientists wrote a big report saying we should keep the rules that help stop pollution. But President Trump and his team want to get rid of those rules. The scientists are trying to show why it’s important to keep protecting the air and Earth. They hope the government will listen. Greenhouse gases from cars and factories make the Earth hotter and can hurt people’s health. Think about ways we can help keep the air clean. In one paragraph, write about something you or your community can do to protect the environment, like planting trees, walking or biking instead of driving, or saving energy at home.
2. OYSTER FARMING IN GHANA
In Ghana, many women have been farming oysters in the mangrove forests for generations. Mangroves are special trees that grow near the ocean and help protect the land and provide homes for sea animals. One woman named Beatrice Nutekpor has been collecting oysters since she was a teenager. She sells them to make money to feed her family and send her daughters to school. But now, climate change and pollution are hurting the mangroves, making it harder to find oysters. Beatrice and other women are working hard to plant new mangrove trees and protect them. Even though it’s tough work, they do it to help their families and protect nature for the future. Draw a picture showing how oyster farmers and mangrove trees work together to help the environment and people. Then, write a few sentences explaining why mangroves are important and how climate change is making oyster farming harder.
3. KIDS FIGHT FOR CLIMATE RIGHTS
A group of kids and teens went to court in Montana because they are worried about climate change. They believe three rules made by President Trump are bad for the environment and could hurt people’s health. These rules support using more coal, oil, and gas instead of clean energy like wind and solar power. Some of the kids have asthma or have lived through wildfires and say these rules make things worse. They told the judge that they want their future to be safe and healthy. The government said the president is allowed to make those rules, but the judge is still deciding what to do. Imagine you are one of the kids in the courtroom. Write a few sentences about why you care about the Earth and what you would say to the judge if you were trying to protect the environment.
4. HARNESSING THE SUN
In South Africa, big mirrors are being used to capture sunlight and turn it into electricity! These mirrors follow the sun during the day and shine light onto a tall tower that collects the heat. That heat makes steam, which powers machines that create electricity. One project called KHI Solar One can make enough electricity to power over 40,000 homes for a whole day! Many places in Africa still don’t have electricity. About 600 million people live without power, especially in parts of Central and West Africa. That makes it hard for kids to study at night, for hospitals to help people, and for towns to grow. But Africa has lots of sunshine—more than almost anywhere else in the world! That means it has great potential for solar power, a type of clean energy that helps fight climate change. Countries like South Africa are starting to build more solar projects, and companies from other countries are sending solar panels to help. Leaders in Africa want to make enough clean energy by the year 2030 to help more people get power and protect the planet. Solar energy is a clean way to make electricity using the sun’s power. In Africa, many people are working hard to build more solar projects and bring electricity to homes, schools, and hospitals. Think about what life would be like without electricity. What would be hard to do? Then, draw a picture of something that solar energy can help power—like a light, a fan, a school, or a hospital. Under your picture, write 2–3 sentences about how solar power can help people in your community or in Africa.
5. RARE BIRD FINDS HOME IN HONG KONG
In the big city of Hong Kong, some very rare birds called yellow-crested cockatoos have made their home in parks between tall buildings. These white birds with bright yellow feathers on their heads are one of the rarest birds in the world. Sadly, there are only about 2,000 left in the wild. They are losing their homes because of tree cutting, storms, and people who try to sell them as pets. But some scientists are trying to help! They are putting up special bird boxes in trees to give the cockatoos a safe place to nest. These birds are important, and people in Hong Kong are learning how to protect them and share the city with them. Think about why it’s important to protect animals like the yellow-crested cockatoo. Write a few sentences explaining how people can help endangered animals in cities, and then draw a picture showing one way humans and animals can live together safely.
