Activities:

1. Create a set of balloon cards. Draw a balloon on the front of a card. Then decorate the balloon with newspaper words and pictures that reflect you and your own interests. Create separate cards for other family members and friends. Write their names on the backs of their cards. Now, show your cards to friends and see if they can guess which person each card represents.

2. In the newspaper, circle pictures of anything you might see flying in the air, not just airplanes. Put a star by those items that need mechanical elements to make them fly.

3. Select a three - person balloon team from people in the newspaper: one person to design the balloon, one person to pilot it and one person to ride in it. Explain your choices.

4. How are these important in hot air ballooning: (a) Montgolfier brothers, (b) propane, (c) evening “glows” and (d) vent?

5. Pretend you own and operate a hot air balloon. Create a travel brochure to encourage people to take a ride in your balloon. In your brochure, include information about how your balloon works, what people might see if they ride in your balloon, and how the ride might make them feel. Remember to “sell” the idea of a balloon ride.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students understand science and technology. (Science: Science and Technology)
