Activities:

1. Design a plaque honoring Langston Hughes. Draw his picture on the plaque. Paste newspaper words that describe him on the plaque.

2. In your newspaper, find two events that would help you develop your appreciation for the arts, particularly poetry or writing. How could you benefit from each event?

3. Find two newspaper stories that you think would be good subjects for poems. Write the first two to four lines of a poem about each story.

4. How were these imp ortant to Langston Hughes: (a) Mary McLeo d Bethune, (b) being a troubador, (c) Harlem Renaissance and (d) college readings?

5. Use the Internet to read other poems by Hughes. Select a poem you like and write a paragraph explaining why it appeals to you.
