Activities:

1. Draw a picture of yourself in lab safety gear. Paste newspaper words and pictures related to chemistry around your picture. Write a sentence about the area of chemistry that most interests you.

2. Draw a large circle on a piece of paper. Divide the circle into three equal sections, like pieces of a pie. In one section, paste newspaper words and pictures that show foods that are fuel for the body. In the second, paste newspaper words/pictures that show fuels for machines and equipment. In the third, paste newspaper words/pictures that show medicines.

3. Collect newspaper pictures that show some aspect of chemistry and how it works. Paste each picture on a separate piece of paper. Show your pictures to friends and see if they can identify how chemistry is used in the picture.

4. How are these related to chemistry: (a) lava, (b) carbon dioxide, (c) fire and (d) paints?

5. Use the Internet to look for careers in chemistry. Name three possible careers. Now write a paragraph describing which career is the most appealing to you. Here are some sites: http://college.cengage.com/chemistry/zumdahl/chemistry/7e/resources/careers.html and http://cenblog.org/just-another-electron-pusher/2012/10/so-many-nontraditional-chemistry-careers/

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.
