Activities:

1. Use newspaper pictures and words to create an instruction sheet for your friends on how to take care of a dog. Use pictures/words for things to keep your dog healthy, to make sure your dog has good food to eat, and to provide exercise for your dog.

2. Look in the comic strips for pictures of dogs. List the comic strip name. Write a sentence explaining what the dog is doing in the strip. Is it helping in any way?

3. Collect newspaper stories of dogs helping others. Paste them in a notebook. Look for dogs who help individuals and dogs who work for groups like firefighters and police. 4. How are these important to the story of Balto: (a) mushers, (b) diphtheria, (c) Dorothy Page and Joe Redington, and (d) New York City?

5. Plan a multi - leg dog race in your community. Your race can be done in a few hours – not several weeks. Use the newspaper to identify five stops along the way. Draw a map. Use the newspaper to find the following for each stop: a veterinarian, food and water, and medical supplies.
