Activities:

1. Draw three large bins or cans on a piece of paper. These are your recycling bins. Label the bins Glass, Plastic and Paper/Cardboard. Paste newspaper words and pictures of items that would go in each bin for recycling.

2. Pretend you are planning a neighborhood with homes or an area for businesses. What would your plan look like? Paste newspaper pictures on a piece of paper as the starting point of your area. Then finish your plan by drawing additional buildings or items to finish your plan. Share your plan with friends.

3. Do an energy race with a friend. Each of you take a section of the newspaper. Then set a timer for five minutes. Go through your section of the newspaper and circle any words or pictures that refer to different kinds of energy. Who has the most words/pictures at the end of five minutes?

4. How do these relate to green jobs: (a) hydrologists , (b) biofuels, (c) older towns and (d) wild lands?

5. Select one of the job areas in today’s Mini Page where you might like to work. First, think about your preparation for your job. Make tw o columns on a piece of paper. In the first column, list the skills and aptitudes you should have. In the second column, list the types of educational courses you should take. Next, write a paragraph explaining why you would choose that area of work.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Stud ents can make choices that reduce their impacts on the land, water, air and other living things. (Earth and Space Science, Next Generation Science Standards)
