Activities:

1. Draw a ballot box. Paste newspaper words about elections, voting, polling places and political parties on your ballot box.

2. Circle any stories or ads about candidates for election. List all the names you find. Identify whether each candidate is running for a local, state or national election.

3. Do a candidate road trip. When you go on a car ride with your family, look for candidates’ yard signs or billboards. How many different candidates’ names did you see?

4. How are these important to voting: (a) punched cards, (b) 19th Amendment, (c) midterms and (d) property owners?

5. Use the internet and government websites to find out about elections in your town or city. What times are the polls open? Where are at least three polling places? What local, state and national offices are on the ballot? Use the information you find to encourage people to vote.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students understand the ideas, principles and practices of citizenship in a democratic republic. (Social studies: Civics)

(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
