Activities:

1. In the newspaper, circle stories about African - American leaders in your community, state or country. What areas do these people represent?

2. Make a set of African - American history trading cards. Write a word for events or places that represent progress for African - Americans. On the back, list the name(s) of African - Americans who contributed to progress in that area. Share your cards with friends.

3. In the newspaper, find three African - Americans who are successful in different fields. Write a sentence about each.

4. Who are these people honored for their contributions to our country: (a) a former slave who became a great speaker and writer, (b) a man who produced better food crops, (c) a man who founded the first college for black students, and (d) the first black military pilots?

5. Find an African - American leader today who might be or is now honored by the country. Research the person’s background and write about him or her: one paragraph about the background and one paragraph about the person’s good works today.
