Activities:

1. Use pictures of the American Sign Language alphabet in today’s Mini Page to draw a greeting. Have friends use the alphabet pictures to “read” your greeting.

2. In the newspaper, find five devices or items that can be used to help people who are deaf or have hearing loss communicate with others.

3. In the newspaper, circle pictures of items or situations that can damage people’s hearing. Explain your choices.

4. How are these related to deafness or hearing loss: (a) ossicles, (b) Thomas Gallaudet, (c) closed captioning and (d) American Sign Language (ASL)?

5. Practice spelling your name using the American Sign Language alphabet. Help friends learn to spend their names.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students understand communication modes that provide equal access, based on the needs and preferences of individuals and their families.

(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
