Activities:

1. Draw a picture of yourself getting ready to explore a cave.Across the top of your picture, paste newspaper words that name equipment and other items you should take with you.Across the bottom of the picture, paste newspaper words that show what knowledge and skills you should have to explore caves.

2. Talk with family members and friends about exploring caves.Did anyone explore a cave?What kind of cave?What was their experience like?What did they find inside the cave?Perhaps someone explored a commercial tourist cave.What did they see in the cave?What did they learn?

3. Plan a spelunking trip in a big cave.Select five people from the newspaper that you would invite on your trip because of their knowledge, intelligence or physical abilities.List the names of the people on a piece of paper. Next to each person’s name, write a sentence explaining why you chose that person.

4. How are these related to cave exploration: (a) Mexican bats, (b) twilight, (c) Martel and (d) wall paintings?

5. Write a short story about you and some friends exploring a cave.Describe what you see in the cave.Discuss the physical challenges you had moving through the cave.Talk about the climbing skills you needed.
