After the Associated Press and most other media reported that Joe Biden had won the presidential election, President Donald Trump refused to concede defeat while his lawyers filed lawsuits to challenge the election results. But, his lawyers did not present any evidence of the widespread voting fraud repeatedly claimed by the president. Judges dismissed many of the lawsuits, and it appeared unlikely that the thousands of votes needed to change the election results could be successfully challenged.
Class discussion: Do you think President Trump should concede and accept defeat? Why or why not? Have you read any report from a reliable news source citing evidence of voter fraud? Do you think the outcome of the election can be changed? When a losing candidate refuses to concede an election does it increase divisiveness and distrust among voters? Do you think Trump voters will accept the Biden is the next president? If nearly half the electorate doubts the validity of an election, is democracy in danger? Are Trump’s claims dangerous?
