Unified Korean hockey team could go to Olympics
The International Olympic Committee is considering South Korea's proposal of a unified Korean hockey team competing in the Winter Olympics. North Korea agreed last week to send its athletes to next month’s games in South Korea. North and South Korean athletes have never jointly competed in the Olympics, but the nations’ delegations haved marched together under a flag of of a unified Korea during opening ceremonies in 2000, 2004 and 2006.
■Class discussion: What is the officials status of relations between North and South Korea? What has increased tensions between the two nations in recent years? Do you think the Olympic Games could lead to real improvement in the ties between the two nations? Could it just be a propaganda ploy by North Korea? The United States is pressuring North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. Has any nation that gained nuclear weapons ever given them up?
