Common Core State Standard L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.

Scientists Scramble To Create Replacements For Plastic
There’s a major push to replace plastics in our lives, and not just with paper bags or straws. Over the last 70 years we have produced more than 9 billion tons of plastics that are clogging up our lands and seas. Now, scientists working to create new alternatives from natural, biodegradable materials like crab shells or trees.
■Class discussion: What impact is plastic pollution having on the planet? Researchers have found microscopic pieces of plastic in both animals and human beings. Has plastic entered our food chain? What effect could it have on our health? Would you spend more for food packaged in a biodegradable plastic?
