Hurricanes Are Wetter Than Ever
Hurricanes are bringing more rainfall with them — and experts say our flood control practices need to change to manage the expected surge in water. Recent research has shown that storms now often move slower and drop more rain. Some experts suggest buying up coastal land and using it as a natural buffer that can better absorb the effects of flooding. Scientists expect that general warming and more moisture in the air could increase hurricane rainfall another 10-15 percent.
■Class discussion: Are wetter storms and rising ocean levels making coastal cities and towns more dangerous places to live? What should we do about the threat? Should people be allowed to rebuild flooded homes in coastal areas? What about waterfront homes flooded by hurricanes that move inland? Worldwide, last month was the hottest June ever recorded. Do you think global warming is real or is it a hoax? Why?
