Administration wants to rollback nutrition rules for school meals
The Trump administration has proposed new rollbacks to Michelle Obama's school nutrition guidelines that may lead to more pizza and fries and less fruit and vegetables for students. The proposal would allow schools to cut the amount of vegetables served at lunch, and reduce servings of fruit for some breakfasts. It also would let schools serve more entrees a-la-carte, which could allow students to eat more foods like pizza and fries instead of balanced school lunches.
■Class discussion: What do you think of cutting the amount of fruits and vegetables in your school lunches and breakfasts? Would you rather eat more pizza and fries than meals with a salad and other vegetables? Do you care if eating “junk food” can make you fatter and sicker? Why or why not? How do lobbyists for food producers influence the government’s nutrition guidelines? How much money do those corporations make from your school meals? Should profit trump health?
