Tired health workers brace for holiday spike
With more than 82,000 people hospitalized, U.S. health authorities braced for further increases in COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations and deaths as the spread of the novel coronavirus accelerated. The CDC issued a “strong recommendation” that Americans refrain from traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday as the virus last week killed an average of more than1,900 people and infected more than168,000 new people each day.
■Class discussion: Has the spike in COVID-19 infections and deaths changed you family’s holiday plans? Why or why not? Are there any curfews, face mask mandates or other restrictions where you live? Are you obeying the health rules? What have you and your family done to control the spread of the coronavirus? What could happen if hospitals can’t admit any more COVID-19 patients? Who will decide who may live or die?
