Capitol fence to return ahead of protest supporting rioters
Police will reinstall a tall fence around the U.S. Capitol ahead of Saturday's planned protest to support the roughly 600 people charged in the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the involving backers of former President Donald Trump, sources said. One source said right-wing groups are plan to participate in the rally and might be "targeting policemen." The fence was first installed after Jan. 6 rioters tried to block Congress from formally certifying President Joe Biden's 2020 election victory over Trump, who made false claims of widespread voting fraud.
■Class discussion: U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-NC, called the rioters “political prisoners,” and he said he wanted to "try and bust them out of jail." Do you think the people who charged with breaking into the Capitol are “political prisoners?” Why or why not? Why did Trump say there was widespread voter fraud? Have any courts ruled there was evidence of fraud? Could comments like Cawthorn’s help incite violence at Saturday’s rally? Should police put the fence back up around the Capitol? What else should police do to prepare for the protest?
