Solar storms bring colorful skies and trouble
Spectacular aurora borealis sightings were recorded in several states last week as scientists described how solar storms from the sun's eruptions can affect power networks, satellites, and GPS accuracy by disturbing Earth's magnetic field.
■Class discussion: Have we becoming too dependent on vulnerable technology? Could you cope without a cell phone because of a solar storm? What would happen if we lost electrical power for a long period of time? Could you read a map and compass to navigate without GPS?
