Professional women's hockey league opens up play
The first games of the four-team National Women's Hockey League started Sunday as the New York Riveters took on the Connecticut Whale in front of a sold-out crowd. And for little girls, everyone was a winner. There are other women's hockey leagues, but the NWHL is the first to pay players. The salary cap for each team is $270,000 – an average of about $15,000 per player. However, like the men’s pro leagues, teams are not required pay every player the same salary.
■Class discussion: Would you pay to watch women play hockey? Why or why not? What about other sports? Which professional sports pay women best? Which professional sports pay men best? Why do some sports pay athletes better than other sports? What role does profit play in how professional athletes are paid? The women hockey players must work other jobs to support themselves. Have male athletes ever had to work second jobs? Where did the Green Bay Packers get their name?
