Experts warn about Chinese drones in the U.S.
While the U.S. Department of Defense has banned Chinese-made DJI drones, at least 200 law enforcement agencies across U.S. cities use them according to registration data with the FAA. Most of the drones sold in the United States are made in China, mostly built by DJI. The Department of Homeland Security has warned of security risks, including possible data theft, of using drones built by companies that can be controlled by the Chinese government.
■Class discussion: Do you think Chinese-made drones are a threat to U.S. security? Why or why not? What about all the computers, cell phones and other electronic equipment built in China? How many Chinese-made electronic devices are in your home and school? What would happen if we could no longer buy any electronic devices, components or microchips from China? Do we have the capacity to build all of those electronics in the U.S.? Could we afford all-U.S. electronic goods?
