Trump reschedules rally from Juneteenth
President Trump rescheduled an Oklahoma rally after criticism that it coincided with Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. The campaign event in Tulsa was originally scheduled for June 19th, but Trump announced it would be moved to the 20th "out of respect" for the commemoration. Anyone attending Trump’s first rally since the start of the coronavirus pandemic must agree not to sue if they get COVID-19 at the Tulsa event.
■Class discussion: What is the history of the Juneteenth commemoration? What is it based on? What do you know about the massacre and destruction of the Tulsa neighborhood of Greenwood – Black Wall Street – 99 years ago? Was it a mistake to schedule a political rally in Tulsa on Juneteenth? Do you think the Trump campaign was unaware of the holiday? Do political rallies or protests threaten new outbreaks and deaths from the coronavirus?
