Capitol Police investigating 35 officers in Jan. 6 riot
Thirty-five U.S. Capitol Police officers are being investigated for their actions during the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, and six have been suspended with pay, the police department said in a statement. Details of the investigation were not provided, but just days after the attack two officers had been suspended, according to Democratic Representative Tim Ryan. He said one had taken a selfie with a protester, while another wore a Trump-supporting hat and was directing protesters around the building.
■Class discussion: One Capitol officer died in the riot, many were injured and another later committed suicide. Does is it surprise you that other officers are being investigated over their actions in the attack? Why or why not? Could taking a selfie or wearing a MAGA hat have been attempts to calm protesters and prevent violence? Or, could it have been capitulation? Should police have used lethal force to stop the mob? How do you think Black Lives Matter protesters would be treated if they attacked the Capitol?
