Some mountain town residents struggle as tourism booms
Home and vacation rental prices spike to record highs in a Colorado resort town, making it tough for many local residents to afford a place to live. The small town outside Denver has become a safe haven for remote workers during the pandemic, as well attracting wealthy tourists. But, the workers needed to keep the town running – including teachers, police officers and firefighters - are being priced out of the housing market. It is a trend that has been reported in many communities around the nation.
■Class discussion: Is it becoming harder for many young families to find affordable housing? Where are home prices rising the fastest? Should wealthier communities set aside some areas for less expensive housing? Why or why not? Does your family rent or own your home? There has been a moratorium on most evictions during the pandemic. What will happen when it ends? Is stopping evictions fair to landlords who must continue to pay for mortgages, taxes and maintenance when tenants are unable to pay rent?
