B. The Anatolian peninsula in Asia is the mainland of Turkey on the eastern shore of the Aegean, and the Greek peninsula in Europe is mainland of Greece on the western shore. In the northeast, the Aegean is connected to the Marmara Sea by the Dardanelles strait, and the islands of Rhodes and Crete are on its southern border.

The arrival of more than a million people in Europe in 2015 — mostly Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans — has plunged the 28-nation European Union into what some see as the most serious crisis in its history.
